The celebration continues...
We couldn't just stop at a variety of sweet pies & not offer you a more complete selection of some of the types of pies that are out there. Let's take some time to jump into the flaky, buttery, vegetarian, and meaty savory world of pies. Shall we....?
1. Instant Pot Tamale Pie
by Two Sleevers
This big dense and wildly delicious pie starts off with a base of masa harina that turns the flavor of one tamale into a massive dinner that everyone can eat. What I love most about how it's made in this recipe, is that it uses an InstaPot. Outside of preparing and shredding your meat, you can plan to have this on the table in under an hour!
2. Vegan Pot Pie with Filo Crust
My kids love chicken pot pie! In place of your standard double pie crust, this recipe uses filo dough, to make it light, airy, and buttery on top, and dense, comforting and flavorful on the bottom. This is one easy way to switch up an item that's a regular on your family's menu while still keeping it the same. :-)
3. Beef Empanada Pie
I love a good beef empanada! I love how Anne takes something that's normally classic hand food and turns it into something that can feed the whole family. I think that it's safe to say that when it comes to a slice of this dinner pie, it would be hard to stop at just one.
3. Smoked Turkey Pot Pie
When you look for your traditional fruit pie, there's no shortage of lattice pies (think apple pie, cherry pie, blueberry pie). But lattice pies are not so popular when it comes to savory pies. This perfectly baked Smoked Turkey pie has a lattice top crust that is down packed~so you know that the juicy flavors are locked in, ever so perfectly.
4. Brazillian Sardine Pie
People tease me for eating sardines. (I've eaten sardines for lunch recently with my older Girl Scout troop - another story for another time). However, I have never, ever thought of sardines..... in a pie! Bruna at I Heart Brazil starts with canned sardines in oil, and drains them, and cleans out all of the bones before she begins. Then she adds corn & diced tomatoes along with a few other spices before she pours it all into a sunflower seed oil-based crust. I think that I could get used to this!
5. Vegan Fish Pie
by Vegan Punks
This pie takes healthy comfort food to the next level! With its vegan (made with cannellini beans) faux mashed potato crust and then a warm and creamy baked fished bottom, I'd say that you shouldn't judge this pie by its (title-) cover before you try it!
6. Vegan Shepherd's Pie
This recipe uses traditional potatoes, with plant-based milk and cheese, to create a delightful topping on a bed of lentils, mushrooms, and a whole variety of other vegetables. My favorite part about this pie is that there's no missing the meat because it is loaded with so many other textures and a rich flavor. If you have a traditional Shepherd's Pie lover in your house, you've got to try this one!
7. Zucchini, Onion & Sweet Corn Pie
Can I get a "toot-toot" for winning with end-of-summer veggies? Yes, please! This recipe takes a lot of the thing summer veggies that your garden may be producing in abundance (and the ones that you can't seem to eat enough of) and mixing them together with the perfect amount of shredded cheese, pops it into a Bisquick-made crust, and Voila! Suddenly, you have everyone's tastebuds watering.
8. Egg-Free Breakfast Pot Pie
I love a good breakfast quiche, but this recipe captures that same brunch-morning goodness with a combination of Japanese sweet potatoes & cashews. Cashews? Cashews? I would never have pictured that. However, for my Whole30 and Paleo lovers, this one fits the bill without sacrificing flavor!
9. Cast Iron Chicken Pot Pie
I love my cast iron skillet. This delicious pot pie starts in the cast iron skillet & ends in the cast iron skillet. That is the beauty of cooking with one! Homemade or canned biscuits will make this pie and easy to finish & quick to serve. Delicious!
10. Swedish Cheese Pie
I feel a grilled cheese sandwich coming on...Rather make that a {Swedish} Cheese pie! Gruyere and swiss cheese (that you can get from Aldi's) blended with an egg mixture and baked to perfection in a homemade crust make this pie a must-have on your next brunch menu! I love how simple, and yet not too powerful this pie combination really is.
11. Steak and Stilton Pie
If you love warm comfort food, mashed potatoes & gravy, then this type of pie is for you! Steak & Stilton (or cheese) is a classic pairing that originated in England. Many have adapted this recipe to suit their likings. One of those ways being steak and bleu cheese dressing. 12. Creamy Salmon Pot Pie
I love salmon, but I'll be the first to admit that I have never had it in a pie. There's something about these cute individual little pie dishes, and their flaky crust tops that have me saying, "Yes, please!" Check out the way Betty takes clam juice and a handful of other flavors to make this one a seafood pie to boot!
13. Tomato Zucchini Pie
Have you ever tried nestling garden vegetables into a pie crust? Part pie & part crostada, this recipe takes everything that is summertime fresh and bakes it right into a flavor that takes it from salad to slice of comfort. Hello!
14. Roasted Butternut Squash Pie
Roasted butternut squash, feta & roasted red peppers, wrapped into a flaky buttery crust and topped with a sprinkle of poppy seeds? I see you grabbing a salad plate and a fork. Grab two please, because I definitely want a slice!
15. Sliced Tomato Pie
I have made a lot of tomato pies (with sliced tomatoes vs. cherry) in my day, but I've never seemed to make one without the crust turning out soggy. :-( Dassana fixes that issue by first chopping all of her tomatoes, and a few seasonings and then roasted them in a pan to reduce the liquid. Therefore making for a non-soggy crust. Who knew? I will definitely have to give this method a try!
16. Leftover Chicken Pot Pie
We don't often think of pies as: "rich, hearty, and manly" but this pie proves all of that wrong! This pie literally takes anything that might have been leftover from the roasted chicken dinner the night before (carrots, potatoes, stuffing) and throws it along with all of the deboned leftover chicken, adds a layer of puff pastry dough crust and a chicken stock-based sauce, and boom! I can hear dads everywhere cheering for this one. :-)
17. Mini Greek Spinach Pies (Spanekopita)
If you've never had the combination of spinach and feta and dill wrapped up in a buttery filo dough crust (also known as spanakopita), then you're really missing out! We make this dish usually about once or twice per year. Aleka brings us step-by-step instructions on how to make your own mini greek spinach pies at home. It doesn't take a huge amount of skill, nor lots of fancy equipment to pull this off. A sharp knife or a pizza cutter and a silicon brush for buttering are literally it. Last but not least, add in a little sprinkle of sesame seed for texture and you're good to go. You can't beat that!
18. Chicken and Leek Pie
Leeks and gouda cheese are the amazing co-stars of this dish. Using leftover chicken and set into a deep springform pan-style shortcrust (think "shortbread") make this pie really unique. Adina shares that this is a great pie not only to have for a family lunch or dinner but also something to make for guests or to take on a picnic!
19. Classic Chicken Pot Pie
Y'all know that we have to end this leg of our celebration with a "classic". Cue in a classic chicken pot pie recipe with all of its famous elements: a flaky top & bottom crust, chicken, a creamy sauce, and our faithful line-up of pot pie veggies (peas, corn, and carrots). Who can ask for anything more?
